Level 4 Mountain Bike Leader

 

 

Scope of Leadership

  • This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to operate independently under indirect supervision, and lead participants in a specific outdoor activity, where the emphasis is on safety, in low technical yet dynamic outdoor environments.
  • Graduates of the Mountain Biking strand will be able to plan, prepare for, lead and evaluate mountain bike activities in ‘front country’ terrain on Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) Grade 2 trails.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess and respond to a mountain biking emergency
  • Demonstrate personal skills in mountain biking on grade 3
  • Develop a plan for leading an outdoor experience for a group on Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) Grade 2 trails.
  • Lead an outdoor activity under indirect supervision within an organisation's safety management system.
  • Review and evaluate the leadership of an outdoor recreation experience.

Prerequisites

The following outlines hours and experience that must be completed for the qualification to be awarded. We recommend participants start with all of these conditions met. You will need to provide a plan that clearly shows how you will demonstrate these conditions before the final date of the qualification.


Personal riding on MTBNZ trails Grade 3 for at least two hours; at least 30 hours of riding on trails up to and including MTBNZ trail Grade 3. Selected Grade 3 trails must be within an hour of emergency services and ridden within daylight hours.

Level 6 Mountain Bike Advanced Professional Practice

Scope of Leadership

  • This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to lead, mentor and educate developing leaders, guides and instructors in specific outdoor activities. These individuals can also instruct and/or guide participants in high hazard and/or technically complex outdoor or recreational environments.
  • This qualification will further extend the instructional competence of individuals who already hold extensive applied instructing experience in dynamic, multiple-hazard outdoor activities.
  • Graduates of this qualification are able to work independently and contribute to the daily operation of, and work under, a Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Graduates of the Mountain Biking (Grade 5) strand will also be able to:

 ○ instruct and guide mountain biking activities on trails up to and including Grade 5 including trails in ‘remote locations’; 

 ○ teach others how to guide and instruct mountain bike activities on trails up to and including Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) Grade 5 trails.


Learning Outcomes

  • Teach and critique leaders and instructors in leading and instructing mountain biking activities on trails up to  MTBNZ Grade 4
  • Demonstrate personal advanced mountain biking activities on trails up to and including MTBNZ Grade 5 and apply advanced weather interpretation and forecasting skills for mountain biking
  • Demonstrate preparing to lead and leading a group mountain biking activities on trails up to  MTBNZ Grade 4
  • Critique and manage group safety procedures and systems for mountain biking activities on trails up to and including MTBNZ Grade 5

Prerequisites

New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Instruction) (Level 5) (Any Strand) [Ref: 3661].

personal riding on MTBNZ trails up to and including MTBNZ trail Grade 5 as well as trails that are at least 5 hours long;

  • at least 60 hours of experience instructing or guiding on trails up to and including Grade 5 which includes a minimum of 20 hours on Grade 5 trails.
